From the 2016 GLAS Animation Festival signal film by Kangmin Kim
The first ever GLAS Animation Festival is right around the corner, and next week is the last week to buy passes. I’ve curated two of the special screenings in this festival: Newgrounds: Everything by Everyone with special guest Tom Fulp, the creator of Newgrounds and Experimental CG, a historical screening tracking the development of expressive, artist driven CG filmmaking. I’m also screening my film Hopkins & Delaney LLP as part of the Graduate Competition. There are also some other amazing screenings happening, including a presentation by Henry Selick (Coraline, Nightmare Before Christmas), a screening of the stop motion episode of Adventure Time with director Kirsten Lepore, a retrospective screening of Jérémy Clapin, one of my favorite animators, and Paul Vester, my advisor at CalArts, presentations from international festival organizers Gerben Schermer (HAFF) and Nobuaki Doi (New Chitose Airport International Animation Festival/Georama), and six competition screenings with the best animation being made today.
The whole festival is being put together by Jeanette Bonds, who is a friend of mine from CalArts. We worked together on the 2012 edition of the Platform International Animation Festival, which happened over a weekend at the REDCAT theater in Downtown Los Angeles (I also said some dirty stuff in Jeanette’s film Trusts & Estates). Getting a little bit of a behind-the-scenes look at how GLAS is being put together, I learned what a huge undertaking it is and that it’s a relatively thankless effort. I got to help out a little with the fun stuff of putting together a festival, like curating and planning screenings, but Jeanette is shoveling all of the shit.
So for anyone that is on the fence about possibly attending this fest, I would highly encourage you to do so. Buy a pass and come to the screenings. Things like this will only continue to happen if people support them in their infancy. This festival is showing some of the coolest contemporary animation, and bringing in some serious international talent for screenings, lectures and workshops. There aren’t any other animation events of this scale happening in the US, and beyond being something no serious animator should miss, it also needs your support so that it can happen again and again. And if you miss it this year, make sure to submit your film next year :)
Official A115 tattoos by @claygibson 💉 7 tats and counting!!! For all of us from Experimental Animation at CalArts, and friends of the department, studio A115 is part of our legacy and history. A115 is for life - get it inked in the movies you make and wear it proud on your skin. Let’s get that Wikipedia page by 2020.
I was very fortunate to have Peter Javidpour sit for me in my studio last week for a couple drawings. If anyone else is interested in sitting for a drawing, shoot me a message! Also some other drawings from the last week.

The preproduction time for the Art Party “PCP” scene in We Are Your Friends was extremely short, we only had about a week to lock down our style and pipeline. We did a couple of different tests for the different phases of the scene. Basically, as soon as we got something that we thought worked, it wasn’t a test anymore and ended up in the final scene.
i remember all the times of ma boi seanny working on this at studio lol
I made a candle of my tongue! As a gift 🎁🙊
